The Rubber Roller Group is pleased to announce the Larry Almeida Scholarship. The annual scholarship is given in honor of Larry Almeida, of Contact Rubber Co., whose many years of service to the industry typifies the strength of the entrepreneurial spirit.

The type of applications available are for supplier members and manufacturer members. The difference between the two scholarships is that the Supplier applicants must be an immediate family member of a group member in good standing with the Rubber Roller Group. Manufacturer applicants can be children, grandchildren, or employees of the manufacturing company, also in good standing with the Rubber Roller Group. However, both the manufacturer and supplier applicants have an equal opportunity to win their respective scholarship(s).

Description and Rules

The scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, will be available each year to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a college or university in the US or Canada. Students already in college are eligible to apply, but priority will be given to high school seniors. The Rubber Roller Group member is considered the student's "sponsor" and must sign the student's application form as well. The student must plan to major in a business or technical field (i.e. management, accounting, engineering, chemistry, etc.).

To be considered for the scholarship, the student must submit an application form and an essay on the topic of "What the free-enterprise system means to me" by July 1st of their graduating year. The student must also arrange for his or her school to forward transcripts and SAT scores to the Rubber Roller Group.

The information is forwarded to the parliamentarian who will oversee the selection process, but Mrs. Sue Almeida will make the final selection decisions. The Group's decision will be announced to the selected recipient by August 15th, and payment will be made directly by the group's secretary / treasurer to the student's chosen school in two installments of $500.00 per semester.

Scholarships are renewable, at the discretion of the Board of Directors for up to 3 additional consecutive years. The student must forward certified grade transcripts, letter of intent to continue his or her education, maintain a 3.0 GPA, continue to pursue the required degree options, and work during the summer in a for-profit enterprise (unless attending school full-time during the summer semester as well). The Rubber Roller Group acknowledges a debt of gratitude to Mr. John Slotten of Valley Roller Company for originating the idea of offering these scholarships, and to Mrs. Almeida for her gracious willingness to select the recipients.
